Check out Amazon's new Rivian EV delivery vans that will soon be cutting you off in traffic as their harried driver contractors try to meet impossibly high delivery quotas

About a year ago, Amazon and Rivian !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that Amazon would be buying 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian. Amazon has now !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! said van, without delving into detailed specs, because, well, it’s a proprietary delivery van and nobody’s going to be bench racing this thing against FedEx and UPS vans. Or...will they?

In addition to being an EV, the Rivian Amazon van is highly aerodynamic, has fancy LED lighting, multiple screens in the dash, a reinforced driver’s door (to repel attacks from roving boxcutter-wielding package thiefs?), and what Amazon refers to as “‘dancefloor’ inside the driver’s cabin for easy movement inside the van, ” whatever that’s supposed to mean.

All I know is, those hand-picked driver contractors delivery service partners in Amazon’s promotional video sure do look excited about this new van. It’s probably because of the embossed Amazon smile logo in the headrest .

So how much will these service partners be bringing in once they are done paying for the lease on these every month?

I *think* Amazon provides the vans to them, unlike uber/lyft drivers.

Wow Rivian really? LOL

The biggest surprise is that Rivian actually made something real

Thanks, now I can’t stop picturing the NHRA Delivery Van series. Ranging from unmodified factory vans up through purpose-built racers with a van-like body bolted on top. At the end of the track the back doors open and the chute pops out of the cargo area.

It s till feels wild to me that Amazon’s doing their own delivering. I live very far from anywhere that that’s going on so all m y Amazon packages still come  via UPS.

No doubt they ran some numbers and figured they can make more money that way.

So far everything I've seen from them, they seem to be serious, and actually have their poop in a group. Unlike, say, Nikolai.

We pretty much only get our Amazon packages delivered by Amazon drivers. Except some stuff for Sunday deliveries comes by USPS. Anything  Amazon can do to improve ruthless efficiency, they will. And yet I keep buying shit from them. Although since covid hit I feel like I’ve been both relying on them and moving away from them where I can.

My shop services the Amazon vans from the local distro. We have, last I checked, six different companies that drop them off and pick them up, and typically have at least one in the lot at all times. I don’t expect us to see these electric ones as much as we do the Sprinters, Transits, it especially Promasters, since they’re in for oil changes more than anything else.

USPS sunday delivery also isn’t a thing out here in the boonies. They've only recently started delivering on saturdays within the last few years.

I’ve actually been ordering less from Amazon during all this. Covid’s made them drop their two day shipping guarantee in my region so now I often find stuff on eBay with quicker “will deliver on” dates. I think I’ve only made five or six Amazon orders since March.

I remember them doing that to encourage people to branch into this business so they could build up fleets.
